When schools closed down during the pandemic, children in the tribal district of Chhota Udepur experienced a great loss of education. Unlike children in the cities, most families in the tribal areas cannot always afford mobiles and smart phones. However, many government school teachers in the district set an exemplary example of reaching out to the local children by making special efforts. This podcast captures the endeavour of Jagdish N. Makwana, a teacher in the Rojkuva village Primary School. During the entire duration of the pandemic, Jagdishbhai went the extra mile to keep the children of his school engaged in activities. He held online summer camps by bringing together his students who had access to smart phones and asking them to communicate with those who did not have internet access. In order to sustain the interest of children, he designed subject-wise activities for students from Standards 1 to 8. He gradually got parents to participate and began to hold festival celebrations for children, maintaining all Covid protocols. He thus used the pandemic to tap the children’s creativity and keeping them meaningfully engaged. In recognition of his innovative efforts, he has been awarded by the government.
