When the national lockdown was announced in India in March 2020, many on the move faced the challenge of reaching back home. Migrants were one section of India’s population who suddenly found themselves without work and transportation to travel back home. This podcast presents the stories of Adivasis in the Chhota Udepur district of Gujarat who found themselves stranded in places like Kutch, Jamnagar and Rajkot where they had gone for seasonal labour work. They had to walk miles and days with their children, many times without food and water. Several fell sick on the way. The migrants here also share humanitarian experiences where local people, health care centres and the police helped migrants on foot with food and medical aid. One of the residents also shares how fear of being quarantined led a family who had travelled back from abroad, to flee their village. These events bring forth the lived experiences of Chhota Udepur residents and are representative of similar experiences elsewhere.
